Newcastle eye a move for “world class” £86m World Cup star

Newcastle United are in desperate need of a positive summer transfer window after a disappointing 12 months on Tyneside.

Despite reaching the round of 16 in the Champions League last season, the Magpies’ Premier League campaign was frustrating and ended without qualification for European football next season.

It will feel as though the club has taken two steps forward and three steps back for Newcastle fans, and a strong recruitment drive could help not only settle several concerns but also put the side back in contention to break into the top six once again.

What are Newcastle’s transfer plans?

According to Mark Douglas for iNews, Newcastle have split their transfer plans in two, with the priority deals becoming the main focus of the summer – a shortlist of players capable of significantly transforming what has become a stale squad on Tyneside.

The second strategy consists of opportunistic options who could add depth in key positions and would be considered as a Plan B shortlist should the club have to pivot quickly in the market.

Newcastle have already signed sought-after goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Stade de Reims on a long-term deal but have not been able to secure any further additions so far, missing out on winger Victor Munoz to Liverpool.

Following the sale of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes have both been subjected to intense interest from other Premier League clubs, which will be frustrating for Eddie Howe.

While Newcastle are prepared to sell their Italian ace if their £100m valuation is met, Arsenal’s approach for captain Guimaraes was instantly rejected and the club currently have no interest in entertaining offers.

Who are Newcastle linked with?

Newcastle have already been linked with several players this summer, including Lamine Camara, Abde Ezzalzouli and Marco Palestra.

With the World Cup in full swing, many clubs will be waiting to progress deals and negotiations as players continue their involvement in the tournament.

Over the last few days, the Magpies have turned their attention to a World Cup sensation in a move that could redefine their attacking efforts.

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle are eyeing a move for Germany and Borussia Dortmund star Felix Nmecha.

The publication claims that Howe is a huge admirer of the talented midfielder, but with a price tag of €100m (£86m), it could prove to be a deal beyond the North East giants.

Should Newcastle sign Felix Nmecha?

There is no doubt that Nmecha would be a statement signing for Newcastle, but they must decide whether pursuing a move would be the right use of their resources.

The club have developed a reputation for allowing potential deals to drift before making a decisive move, often wasting valuable time and ultimately falling short at the final hurdle.

The Germany international, hailed as “world class” by Julian Nagelsmann, has been one of the standout performers at the World Cup this summer, registering a goal and an assist during the group stage.

Indeed, Newcastle already boast a talented midfield with Guimaraes and Tonali, who have become two of the most sought-after players this summer.

However, Joe Willock and Jacob Ramsey have struggled to consistently dominate their roles and provide the perfect balance alongside the influential pair, while Joelinton has continued to battle fitness issues.

In terms of the role Nmecha would occupy at St James’ Park, Newcastle already possess significant depth in midfield and would likely need to move on at least one of their current options to justify pursuing such an expensive deal.

With several key areas of the squad still requiring investment, Newcastle cannot afford to let another transfer window pass without addressing their most pressing issues.

While Nmecha has demonstrated the quality to improve almost any side and would undoubtedly be an exciting addition at St James’ Park, the Magpies’ resources may be better spent strengthening positions that lack the same level of depth.

If Howe is to guide Newcastle back into European contention, making the right decisions in the market will be just as important as making the biggest ones.
